Behind West Side StoriesThis project was over 100 years
in the making but was only recently undertaken to make it a reality. When we
began, our goal was and still is to provide a loving tribute to a community
that was unique in this country and one which holds very strong and dear
memories to those whose identities and lives were shaped by it.
As
we developed the project, we quickly discovered that a documentary would not be
enough to capture the treasure trove of memories that existed within the
Westside community and that we had to find a means to include any and all
recollections from those who wanted to participate. It was then that we
conceived of an idea similar to the Shoah Foundation where in addition to the
documentary, we would interview anyone who wanted their memories preserved for a
lifetime, and then archive them in a database that would be available for
family members, friends, students or anyone to access. STEVE FELD (Director/Producer)Over the past thirty years, Steve
